Ingalls was a professor of anatomy and surgery in Brown University (1811–1823). He is reputedly the first doctor in America to amputate at the shoulder joint for a gunshot injury. "He married Lucy Myrick Ridgeway and their son was William Ingalls (1813–1903), a visiting surgeon at the Boston City Hospital and an obstetrician of some note." - American Medical Biographies (1920) p. 592.
