Gallaeus or Galle was Walloon minister in Zierikzee and then in Haarlem and has remained famous for his learned dissertation on the Sibylline oracles. The Sibyls were mythical seers, who made predictions on the fate of Rome. The Sibylline Books by the Romans were carefully kept and consulted in very special circumstances. The original books have been lost in antiquity. On plates are depicted 12 different Sibylline Oracles as well as images of a temple on a fast-flowing river and the worship of the god Hercules Magusanus.
