Ammianus Marcellinus was a Greek Roman soldier during the 4th century (353 to 378 A.D.) Ammianus served as an officer in the armies of Constantius II, Julian, and Valens, fighting in Gaul and the Middle East. After retiring from the military, he wrote one of the last extant histories of Rome in the 380s. Marcellinus's history was a continuation of the works of Tacitus. His extant writings provides the foundation for modern understanding of Rome in the 4th century.
