Admiral William Sidney Smith (1764-1840) was a British frigate captain captured off the coast of France during the French Revolutionary War. He was imprisoned in Paris until 1798. After being freed he served in the Mediterranean against Napoleon's incursion into the Levant and Egypt. Smith was criticized for his independence of action and was a headache for his superiors. He was a popular naval hero in Britain and notable for his many naval battles and extraordinary career.
