John Whitgift's theological views were controversial, placing his stamp on the church of the Reformation. He shared Queen Elizabeth's hatred of Puritans, enforcing her policy of religious uniformity, writing the Act against Seditious Sectaries passed in 1593, making Puritanism an offense. ESTC T153491
