[The Bible in English. Interesting provenance: Lord Charles Cornwallis' Copy, with his signature.]  Quarto, 22 x 16.5 cm.  Bound in contemporary "Cambridge" style calf.  All edges gilt. Engraved title page with heart motif and images of the prophets.  The Old Testament, New Testament and book of Psalms have their own title pages. Woodcut genealogies and map of the Holy land at front. Defective copy, lacking 5 preliminary leaves and last few leaves of psalms.  Tears to A3 & C2, genealogy leaves.  Staining. Trimmed close at top margin. Bound with Barker's edition of the Book of Common Prayer (lacking title and 4 leaves), and Sternehold-Hopkins 1619 metrical Psalms with letterpress music.

Provenance: Signature of Charles Cornwallis.  General Charles Cornwallis (1738-1805) was one of the leaders of British forces during the American Revolution.  He surrendered to George Washington in 1781 at Yorktown, VA.  Additional signature of William J.M. Ruxton.  (Presumed to be William Ruxton, Clergyman without Cure Souls, 61, b. 1820 St. Marylebone, Middlesex; England). More recently this copy was part of the early English Bible collection of Dr. John A. Downey (M.D., Harvard; D.Phil, Oxon), 1978-1979.
