Freshfield was a British lawyer, author and a keen traveler and mountaineer. He edited the Alpine Journal from 1872 to 1880, was an active member of the Royal Geographical Society and the Alpine Club and served as President of both. He teamed with Italian photographer Vittorio Sella for this work. Freshfield was the first foreigner to reach the Eastern Summit on Elbrus; he led an exploration of the Caucasus and was the first man, officially, to conquer Kazbek with guides from the village Gergeti. Freshfield also became the first mountaineer to examine the western face of Kangchenjunga, which rises from the Kangchenjunga Glacier. After returning to the Caucasus in 1887 and 1889, he published this work, which was the authority on the region for many years. The photographs by Sella are regarded as some of the finest mountain images ever produced.
