Pott was a founder of the orthopedic field, as well as the first doctor to link environmental causes and cancer (Chimney Sweepers' Carcinoma). Pott's discoveries encouraged legislation in the form of the Chimney Sweepers' Acts, designed to protect young boys from the carcinoma.  Pott was one of the most famous physicians in 18th century England.
