Thick folio.  Pages are generally in very good condition.  Mostly clean, unmarked pages, a few scattered spots to some of the rear most pages.  Surprisingly good condition.  Title within architectural border.  Each part has a special title page with a 1627-1628 imprint. Engraved title. 1321 pages.  Bound in early 1/4 leather over marbled boards.  Boards rubbed.  Rebacked. Small 19th Cen. Methodist Church book plate on front paste down. 

Joseph Hall (1574-1656) was an early English satirist and Bishop of Exceter and later Bishop of Norwich. Hall has been described as an Anglican Calvinst by M.W. Dewar.   Of him Thomas Fuller wrote: "He was commonly called our English Seneca, for the purenesse, plainnesse, and fulnesse of his style. Not unhappy at Controversies, more happy at Comments, very good in his Characters, better in his Sermons, best of all in his Meditations." – DNB.  This work includes: Meditations and Vowes, Divine and Morall: Serving for Direction in Christian and Civll Practice; Characters of Vertues and Vices; Ethicks, Salomons Politicks, Oeconomicks, Espistles; Sermons; A Common Apologie of the Church of England, Against the Unjust Challenges of the Overjust Sect, Commonly called Brownists; A Serious Disswasive From Poperie; No Peace with Rome; The Righeous Mammom; The Honour of the Married Clergie, and a number of other works.  Anglican 17th century Theology.
