"And thou Britain especially Scotland, my dear country, the purest portion of Christ's Church in the world this day, assure thyself, and I assure thee, for I know it, that thy good people are as sheep in the midst of wolves." P. 17. A reformed (Early Presbyterian) anti-Catholic tract by a Scottish minister. In historical context, in 1638 during the year this tract was printed by Aberthany, King Charles Star Chamber sentenced other Puritan writers and pamphlet distributors to public flogging. The King raised an army to combat the Scottish Covenanters, but finding difficulty financing it was forced to call upon Parliament. In 1639m Parliament's refusal to adhere to Royal dictates created a constitutional crisis and piled the tinder for the English Civil War. Refs: Pollard & Redgrave 72; Hazlitt II, page 2. Abernethy
