Don Alvaro was a Spanish diplomat and general. He served in the War of Spanish Succession in Philip V's army and later in Italy. He died fighting against Ottoman forces in Oran, North Africa in 1732. He wrote Reflexiones Militares del Mariscal de Campo (first published in Turin in 1724-1727, and Paris in 1730, Fr: Reflexions militaires et politiques), an multi-volume guide that aimed to be a complete treatise on all aspects of war. The work was widely read and translated into four languages. Napoleon, Voltaire, Louisâ€Hector Drummond de Melfort, Frederick the Great, and 18th century West Point had Marcenado's treatise on military science in their libraries.
