Minor shelf wear.  79 engraved plates, several folding, engraved diagrams of sterns counted in the pagination, list of subscribers. xxix, 425 pages : illustrations ; 28 cm.  All edges dyed red. Scattered spotting, mostly to few few fold outs and title.  Sabin 22091.  Armorial bookplate, "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense".  Captain Edward Pelham Brenton (1774-1839) was an officer of the British Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.  Brenton was born in colonial Rhode Island.  His family were loyalists who emigrated to Britain during the American Revolution. After retirement from the Royal Navy in 1815 he became an important naval historian.  He wrote Naval History of Great Britain from the Year 1783 to 1822 in 1823, which received widespread acclaim. He was awarded the Companion of the Order of the Bath.  The author, Admiral Sir Charles Ekins served in the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War, the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.  He was also in the Order of the Bath.
