Johann Rudolph Glauber was a German-dutch alchemist and chemist in the iatrochemical tradition of Paracelsus. He was one of the first in the field to actively experiment with chemical engineering, and is known for his discovery of sodium sulfate, which was named Glauber Salt after him. Another of Glauber's significant contributions was the advent of improved distilling furnaces. Glauber wrote at least 40 volumes on chemistry, alchemy, and their history, especially ancient eastern. Mundi Miracula discusses the Turkish and Islamic roots of alchemy. The first volume was later followed by six volumes worth of continuation. Since the 17th century, the series has been widely translated and reproduced. Some additional contributions to the written history of chemistry and alchemy include his Tractatus de natura salium and Novum lumen chimicum.
