Founded in 1830, the Boston Society of Natural History was established to promote the study and understanding of natural history.  The Society replaced the earlier New England Linnaean Society and comprised of many of the same members.  In 1946 the society renamed itself the Museum of Science, Boston, which continues to this day.  Many of the members and directors of the Society studied under noted Harvard biologist, Louis Agassiz.  These five volumes contain the Society's articles for the 38 year period between 1866-1904.  Most of the content concerns natural history and biology, with a focus on the animals of New England. - See: Johnson, Richard. "The Rise and Fall of the Boston Society of Natural History" Northeastern Naturalist , Vol. 11, No. 1 (2004), pp. 81-108.
