Tchaikovsky's ballet, based on the Brothers Grimm version of Charles Perrault's tale of the Sleeping Beauty, was premiered in Moscow in 1891; the 1921 production in London had choreography by Serge Diaghilev and costume and set designs by Bakst, and it was this production that gained Tchaikovsky's ballet its enduring popularity.
