Jeremiah Evarts

Evarts wrote under the pseudonym of William Penn in the National Intelligencer (the paper of record of its day). Evarts has had been Editor of the Missionary Herald and while travelling in the Southeast came in contact with Cherokee nation. Evarts was a stridently pro-Indian writer, who argued against the contemporary plan to remove Indians from their land (i.e. trail of tears). Evarts became an early Indian rights activist and proponent of the universal rights of man.
