Thomas Moore

Willis and Sotheran, 136 Strand, London, 1857

[Orchidology]  Large octavo (25 x 15.5 cm.)  Bound in publisher’s leather backed brown boards.  Rebacked.  Held in custom made, forest green leather, clamshell case.  100 hand-colored engraved plates (9 double-page and one folding) by I. Watts, G. Barclay, F. George, A. Aglio and others after Miss Drake and Miss C.C. Sowerby.  Plates include plant names identified in ink. Moore's guide to orchids was influenced by John Lindley's Folia Orchidaceae.  His classification follows that of Lindley, and Moore reprinted the original orchid plates from the Botanical Register edited by Lindley. Moore added some further orchid plates, to "render the volumes illustrative of all the genera worthy of cultivation", and was assisted in writing the letterpress by "able practical cultivators." - Sotheby's sale 1922, lot 313, 2007.  Pritzel 6407.
