Bound in contemporary leather backed boards.  Both boards detached, spine leather brittle.  [2], ii, 260 pages, 1 unnumbered leaf of plates : map ; 23 cm. Clean, unmarked pages. "Lowell murdered his wife on a country road near Lewiston, Maine, in June, 1870; the body was not found for more than three years, when the headless skeleton was discovered. Despite the lapse of time, Lowell was convicted. The victim's mother had a dream about the time of the murder which foretold the circumstances of her death" - McDade 633.  Signature of George H. Pierce, Bowdoin College.  Pierce was a noted alumni of Bowdoin and a doctor.
