Double-page engraved map of "The City of New York" by William Hooker, with hand-colored outline. Engraved title, 22 engravings on 11 plates, 50 pp. Browning (especially to the tissue paper guards) and spotting throughout. Early signature of C.A. Van Heck on front end page. Rarely found complete, the work was issued in parts over a number of years. The work was originally intended to be issued in ten parts, of which only eight were actually issued. Only first six are present in this collection. "The Peabody prints offer fascinating glimpses of New York in the 1830s" and form "a lively document of a city in the making" (Deak).
