Charles Lyell was an English geologist who traveled through the United States (Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Virginia, Georgia & the Midwest) and Canada (Nova Scotia) in 1841-42. In his "Travels" Lyell gives an unusual descriptions of America incorporating discussions North American geology with comments on American education and slavery.
Interesting California provenance: Early stamp of Laura E. Davies. Small book plate stating "From the library of Ed Grabhorn at the Grabhorn Press." Grabhorn was an Arts & Craft movement inspired San Francisco based fine printer. Edwin Grabhorn founded the press with his brother Robert in 1920.
