Wine, the Vine, and the Cellar

Wine, the Vine, and the Cellar

Thomas George Shaw

London : Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts, & Green, 1864

Bound in publisher's burgundy cloth. Gilt image of a vintner, raising his glass, sitting on a wine barrel, ringed by ripe grape vines on front. Hardcover. Small fray at spine edge. Corners lightly bumped. Binding shaken. Clean, unmarked pages. xv, 540 pages, 24 p. of ads.  Illustrations, folded frontispiece, map, folded tables. Shaw was a Scottish wine merchant who was almost single-handedly credited with bringing about a reduction in the tax on wine coming into Great Britain and Ireland. Andre Simon called this title "one of the most interesting books we have on the subject."  Shaw's second edition is considered the best as he completely revised and enlarged the text. He admits his ignorance of American wines but notes "California seems better adapted for producing good wine" - Gabler G36130. [Gabler, Wine into Words: p.331].
