Edward Everett, serving his first term in Congress, was the first eulogist to honor the late 2nd and 3rd President. He was the first to note Adams last words 'Jefferson still survives.' Everett was one of the great American orators of the antebellum and Civil War eras. He is often remembered today as the featured orator at the dedication ceremony of the Gettysburg National Cemetery in 1863.
