Restored copy, with water damage.  28 cm.  Contemporary leather boards rebacked on later brown cloth. Damp staining and spotting throughout.  Soiling to many of the margins, and evidence of restoration work throughout.  Complete, except lacking one leaf of the table of contents (leaf vi). vi, [1], 526, [2] p. frontispiece portrait; 7 aquatint color plates (Summer Palace opposite Tien-Sing, Anchorage at Tong-Chow, Temple of Quan-Yin-Mun near Nankin, See-Lang-Shan, Gan-Kin-Poo from the west, Seaou-Koo-Shan from the east, and Island of Pulo Leat), 3 maps (Large folding map in front of Canton to Peking, Map of Java Sea, Map of Yang-Tse River.) Portrait of Ellis has a number of closed tears, also the title page has a tear, which have been restored.  Folding map has been rehinged.  

   Sir Henry Ellis, began his career as minister plenipotentiary ad interim to Persia, and returned after only a year, having successfully negotiated a peace treaty. This volume is a first edition of the author's account of the European expedition to China, which was a rare undertaking during this period. Interspersed with observations upon the face of the country, the polity, moral character, and manners of the Chinese nation.  <br> Provenance: F. Wolferstan Thomas's book plate.
