An Introduction to the History of England
William Temple
London : Printed for Richard Simpson at the Three Trouts, and Ralph Simpson at the Harp in St. Paul's Church-yard, 1695
1st ed. Bound in contemporary paneled English calf. Boards detached. [8], 320 [i.e. 318], [2] p. Advertisements on p. [1-2] at end. A history of England from ancient times to 1066 by prominent English diplomat and essayist Sir William Temple (1628-1699). Jonathan Swift worked as Temple's secretary from 1689 to 1699 and was influenced considerably by Temple's literary style. Temple may have intended the book as a defense of King William III. This work was one of the first scholarly studies of Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman culture.Refs: ESTC R14678. Wing T638.
