Quarto.  20th century Spanish binding.  Bound in 1/4 morocco over purple cloth.  Good binding and cover. Frontispiece and folding map of the Iberian Peninsula.  iv,187, [1] p.  Toning to frontispiece and title page. Pages are clean besides. Palau 68177. Dalrymple was a Scottish soldier and MP. As a major he successfully fought against the Spanish invasion of Portugal in 1762.  He was later stationed in British America (Halifax and Boston, 1766-1768) to enforce the unpopular Townshend Acts.  Troops under his command were involved in the Boston Massacre. He successfully attacked and conquered the French island of St. Vincent, 1772-1773.  He was promoted to Major General during the American Revolution and served as quartermaster general for British forces between 1779-1783. Provenance: From the collection of United States Ambassador and diplomat, Alexander Weddell (1876-1948).  Weddell was US Ambassador to Argentina from 1933-1938.   Engraved book plate from Virginia House Museum.
