Joel Elias Spingarn (1875-1939) was an American literary critic, educator, and civil rights activist. As an liberal Republican he joined the NAACP shortly after it was founded, serving as a Chairman of the Board (1913-1919). In 1914 he established the Spingarn Award, an annual award for outstanding achievement for an African American. 

Sir William Rothenstein (1872-1945) was an English painter, printmaker, and writer on art. He is best known for his art of both world wars.
