Top edge gilt. Fine binding and cover. Original cloth covers bound in.  xxiv, 524 pages portrait, folded plan, 25 cm.  Later signature of  Christopher Magee Steel. Steel was a Columbia-trained historian for the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The author's inscription to Margaret includes a note about her brother,  Christopher Lyman Magee, a Republican boss of Pittsburg.
