Bacon's Advancement of Learning was written in 1605 and contributed to the modern philosophy of science and the development of the scientific method.  "Bacon had an immediate and lasting influence upon philosophy and natural science... The impetus to the foundation of the Royal Society came from Bacon's writings; to Voltaire he was 'le pere de la philosophie experimentale'." Printing in the Mind of man, 119 (citing 1620 ed). This edition was part of Thomas Jefferson's library.
