[A Primary Account of the Political and diplomatic history of the English Civil War and Commonwealth]  Folio, 40 x 26.5 cm. Bound in contemporary paneled calf.  Decorated in blind. Gilt fleurons stamped on cover. Some shelf wear. Front hinge starting, with a partial crack at joint. Collated: [10], 702, [13] pages.  Internally generally clean and attractive.  Text printed in two columns, with wide margins.  Some ruffling along bottom margin.  According to Lownes this is, "The best edition, containing the passages which were struck out by the Earl of Anglesey.  'This work, that has been so much cried up, is a meagre diary, wrote by a poor-spirited, self interested and self-conceited lawyer of eminence; but full of facts.' - Bishop Warburton." - Lownes, 1938 p.  It was initially published in 1682 by Arthur, Earl of Anglesea, who took considerable liberties with the manuscript.  This edition contains a more accurate account, without Anglesea's excises.  ESTC, T144860.

The author, Bulstrode Whitelocke (1605-1675) was an important English parliamentarian.  He was a Member in the Long Parliament, and drafted many of the charges in the impeachment of Earl Strafford, as well as the Bill for making Parliaments indissoluble.  Whitelocke was active in the Civil War and was in the Commonwealth's Council of State; Commissioner of the Great Seal; and Commissioner of the Treasury.  An important account by an intimate member of Cromwell's government.
