Le Siege de la Ville de Breda

Hermannus Hugo, Spinola, Chifflet Philippe

Antverpiae : Officina Plantiniana, 1631

Folio. 7 double page engraving, 6 single page plates, 2 in text gravings. Lacking engraved title piece. 163 pp, [15]. Lacking final leaf. Contemporary limp vellum. Vellum soiled. Damp staining to margins, scattered spotting. This is the French translation made on the original Latin Hugo (Obsidio Bredana, 1626 ). See Maurice Cockle (110) for the English edition and 817 for several other editions. Cockle acknowledges that this is the best contribution made in the 17th century to the seat of Breda both militarily and politically. The siege of Breda lasted 11 months and cost the lives of 5000 inhabitants of the city. The capitulation of the city on June 2, 1625 was immortalized by the painting of Velasquez "Las Lanzas o The rendition of Breda".
