[Part one only: The standard work on Byzantine Greek, the editiones principes of the Philoxenus and Cyrillus Glossaries] Folio; 36 cm. Bound in early 19th century leather-backed boards.  Solid binding and cover.  666 columns. Woodcut printer's device on title.  Title page has Estienne's name inked out (presumably due to Catholic church censorship).  Restoration to (mostly marginal) worming on the last 120 pages.  Lacking three preliminary leaves: a-i6, k4, l-n6, o4, p-z6, A-C6, D4.  Refs: Adams S 1770; Schreiber 182; Renouard Estienne 133:4.

"First edition of this important work, commonly dismissed as a supplement to the Thesaurus Graecae Linguae; it is in fact an independent work, though a by-product of Henri Estienne's work for the Thesaurus. The volume is divided in two parts, of which the first consists of the editiones principes of the two most valuable ancient Byzantine bilingual glossaries: the Latin-Greek Philoxenus Glossary, and the Greek-Latin Cyrillus Glossary... The second part [not included in this book] consists of Henri's extensive commentaries on the Greek dialects, and is a pioneering work in the field of Greek dialectology." - Schreiber.  Estienne reprinted two Greek manuscript dictionaries from the 2-3rd centuries AD: Lexicon Latinograecum vetus, glossarii nomine inscriptum and Vocabula Graeca cum Latina interpretatione, ex diversis libris, glossariorum nomine inscriptis, collecta.
