From the Earth to the Moon Direct in 97 Hours 20 Minutes and a Trip Around It

Jules Verne; Louis Mercier & Eleanor Elizabeth King (trans.)

London : Sampson Low, Marston, Low & Searle, 1873

First English edition. 78 of 80 plates. Scarce. Bound in publishers blue cloth. Gilt title and rocket shooting to the moon on front board. Rebacked according to original spine binding. AEG. Good binding and cover. Hinges repaired. Lacking p12 plate "Meeting of the Gun Club" and p95 plate "Projectile Trains for the Moon." Rubbing wear to boards. Scattered foxing. Tranlations of De la Terre a la Lune (1865) and its sequel Autour de la Lune (1870) as combined in the 1872 Paris edition. Landmark novel in science fiction. Voyages Extraordinaires #4. Written more than a century before the Apollo mission, Verne's classic is somewhat a prophetic novel of man's travel to the moon with its thorough and descriptive detail.  Verne notably attempted to do some rough calculations for the cannon and, considering the comparative lack of any data on the subject at the time, some of his figures were close to actual measurement.
