[Rare Early Imprint: Biography of James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose] Small 8vo. Old calf, rebacked. [8], 231 p. [1]. Title in red and black.  With the rare engraved portrait of Pontius, though the portrait has a previous owner's name scratched out and some marginal chipping. A banned book during the Commonwealth period. 

Bishop Wishart was a Scottish Royalist active in the Bishops' Wars.  He was imprisoned with Lord Montrose and wrote this laudatory biography, first published in 1647.  In 1650, the Great Montrose was executed with a copy of Wishart's biography of him tried around his neck.  Wishart updated his biography to include the gruesome circumstances of Montrose's death, of which is chronicled in the final chapter. "Now newly corrected and enlarged by an eye-witnesse of all the fore-mentioned passages." A translation of: De rebus auspiciis serenissimi, & potentissimi Caroli. Wing (2nd ed.)
