[African-American Fine Art: From the library of Dr. Ralph Gomes, Howard University.]  Limited, signed and numbered edition, 451 / 500.   7 inches high by 10 inches wide.  17 3/4 x 16 1/4 inches framed.  Matted, under glass.   Includes a paragraph write up about the artist and his history in Detroit.  Ron Scarbough (1946-2020) was a Detroit area artist.  "A successful artist who had one-man shows at the Flint Institute of Arts and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, he also created commissioned works for the Detroit Athletic Club and the Citadel Military Academy of Charleston, South Carolina."  

Dr. Gomes was a professor at Howard University for 49 years in sociology and criminology. He was also a former Olympic athlete, representing Guyana in the 1960 Rome summer Olympics. Besides his scholarly work, Gomes was active in the black liberation movement. He had an impressive and deep collection of black art, historical advertising and iconography that spoke of the passage of black people and how they sought to record their life stories. His collection spanned from slavery, to antebellum life, to Jim Crow, to the Harlem Renaissance, to sport, to the civil rights movement.
