[The 17th century English vision of Persia, India and Africa]  Folio, 32 x 21 cm.  Bound in contemporary boards.  Rebacked, with renewed hinges.  [8], 399, [20] p., [3] leaves of plates (1 folded, including Babylon and the Temple of Belus). Additional engraved title.  Numerous illustrations in the text, including of a shark attack, flying fish, a pillar of heads, images of the people of Persia, the Cape of Good Hope, an interesting looking penguin, a dodo, numerous maps, etc.  Lacks the final half title leaf.  

An interesting book with lively and captivating accounts of the world. Unlike many other travel writers of his era, Herbert was not an arm chair expert, but an extensive traveler.  He journeyed with Sir Domore Cotton to Persia in 1627.  On his voyage he visited the Cape of Good Hope, Madagascar, Goa, Surat, Ashraf, Qazvin, Kashan, Baghdad, Ceylon, Amol, Mauritius, St. Helena, etc.  When he returned he published this account. It includes mention of an early Welsh discovery of America by Madoc ap Owen, p. 394-396.  Refs: Wing H-1536; ESTC R771.

Armorial bookplate of Victor Albert Child Villiers, 7th Earl of Jersey, Osterley Park.  Villiers was a conservative MP in Disraeli's government, as well as Governor of New South Wales, in Australia.
