Haydon was an important railroad engineer (self educated) and captain in the Confederate Army Corps of Engineers. He was responsible for the construction of Confederate defenses at Ft. Donelson and Fort Henry. After the war he was the chief engineer of the Frederick and Pennsylvania Line Railroad in Frederick, Maryland.  He had an interesting railroad career throughout the country.
