A Course of Legal Study: Respectfully Addressed to the Students of Law in the United States

David Hoffman

 Baltimore Coale and Maxwell, 1817

[Early Maryland Law: The History of American Legal Education] Bound in early leather.  Rebacked.  Minor toning. 383 pages ; 22 cm.

Hoffman was the founder of Law Institute of the University of Maryland (later UM Law School). He designed the first course of legal study in the US.  This book is the product of three years of Hoffman's attempt to create a curriculum at UM. S&S 43650.

Provenance: Bookplate of the author Walter Lord. John Walter Lord Jr. (1917-2002) was a noted author of more than 12 books, including an account of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, "A Night to Remember."  (Genealogical note:  Lord was a nephew of the author, David Hoffman, by his mother, Henrietta Mactier Hoffman's family.  Peter Hoffman, Esq. was David's brother.  I believe this may have been his copy. Peter was the father of Samuel Owings Hoffman (1801-1860), a prominent Baltimore merchant, from which the book remained in the family's hands until Walter Lord's death in 2002.)
